This desktop app was originally developed to help manage the complex workload of academic life. Teaching, research, supervision, meetings, and administrative responsibilities often compete for attention, making it difficult to see how time is actually being spent.

​

The Stat Cat Time Management App provides a simple system for planning tasks, recording work activity, and visualising how time is allocated across different areas of work. By tracking tasks and activities throughout the day, the app generates a clearer picture of workload distribution over time. This makes it easier to identify patterns, monitor balance between different responsibilities, and reflect on how working time is used.

One practical benefit of using a dedicated time-tracking workspace is improved focus. For example, I found that keeping email open all day encouraged constant checking and interruptions. By using this app as the central place to organise tasks and record work activity, email can be handled in deliberate time blocks rather than continuously throughout the day.

The app is designed to be lightweight, private, and local. All data is stored on your own computer, and simple export functions allow you to back up or analyse your records if needed.

Although it was originally built for academic work, the structure can easily be adapted to track time across any set of tasks or projects.

Installation Notes

Because this is an independently developed app and not distributed through an app store, your operating system may display a security warning the first time you run it. This is normal for unsigned applications.

Windows

When opening the app for the first time, Windows SmartScreen may display a message such as “Windows protected your PC.”

To run the app:

  1. Click More info

  2. Click Run anyway

You should only do this if you downloaded the file directly from this website.

macOS

macOS may prevent the app from opening because it is from an unidentified developer.

To run the app:

  1. Try opening the app once (it will be blocked).

  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.

  3. Scroll down to the Security section.

  4. Click Open Anyway next to the blocked app.

Alternatively, you can right-click the app and choose “Open”, then confirm that you want to run it.​​
